Garage Shelving: 18 vs 24 Inch Depth

The shelf depth is the amount of floor you give up.

Comparison guide

Garage shelves with a car door open beside them
Illustration. The useful test is whether the car door still opens after the shelf is loaded.
Quick comparison: Use an 18-inch-deep shelf when the aisle, a car door, or a water heater is close. Use 24 inches when you store bulk totes and you have measured the walkway with the shelf in place.

Door clearance, or bulk totes

Wall shelves with a car door open next to them
A tighter aisle. Depth that looks fine on an empty wall can block this door once bins stick out.
Deeper garage shelves holding totes, with floor still open
Deeper shelves for totes. Only if the remaining walkway is still usable.

How to measure

What not to do

Do not buy the deeper unit because it holds more on paper.
