How to Store Patio Cushions for Winter

Cold is not the problem. A cushion that still feels cool in the middle is still wet.

How-to guide

Beige patio cushions stood on edge indoors
Illustration. Dry fabric, stood on edge, not sealed in a wet bin.
Quick method: Brush them off, dry the foam until the center is no longer cool, and store them indoors off the floor. A sealed bag or a wet deck box is what grows mildew.

Step by step

  1. Brush off debris. Check seams for leaves that hold water.
  2. Wash removable covers the way the tag describes. Do not soak the foam.
  3. Stand each cushion on its edge until the middle is not cool.
  4. Keep mildewed cushions out of a closed bin with the clean ones.
  5. Store dry cushions on a shelf, stacked loosely. Do not vacuum-seal foam.
  6. If they must stay in a deck box, dry them first and empty any water in the bottom.

What not to do

Do not bag damp cushions in plastic. A furniture cover is not winter storage for the cushions themselves. A closed deck box can still hold a puddle.
