Seed Starting Mix vs Garden Soil

The bag name is not the container.

Comparison guide

A seed tray of pale mix with tiny seedlings
Illustration. Fine, light mix in a tray. This is not a raised bed.
Quick comparison: Use seed-starting mix in trays and small cells. Use garden or raised-bed soil in outdoor beds. Do not fill a pot with either one just because the bag was nearby.

Tray, or a bed

Seed tray with pale starting mix
A tray. The mix stays light so tiny roots are not sitting in heavy soil.
A raised bed of dark garden soil
An outdoor bed. Heavier soil is fine here. It is a poor shortcut for a seed tray.

How to choose

What not to do

Do not start seeds in soil from the yard, and do not fill a whole bed with seed-starting mix. If leaves yellow later, check water before you change the bag. See why leaves turn yellow.
