How Many Cube Storage Compartments Do You Need?

Empty cubes are not storage. They are a larger piece of furniture.

How-to guide

A six-cube shelf beside a bed
Illustration. A small grid beside the bed. Six openings, and several are already doing a job.
Quick method: Count the categories you will actually keep there, then measure the wall. A small unit is enough for a bedside or entry. A wide grid belongs only on a wall that can hold it, and a tall one should be anchored.

A corner, or a whole wall

Six-cube shelf next to a bed
A small room. Use a few cubes for real categories. Do not buy a wall of openings for two baskets.
A wide cube grid on a living room wall
A wide unit. It needs the wall, a way to anchor it, and enough categories that the cubes do not sit empty.

How to choose

What not to do

Do not start from the largest cube count. Anchor a tall unit so it cannot tip.
